Often Mistaken For

Is Calendula item toxic?

Calendula petals from unsprayed plants are generally treated as non-toxic to rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas in treat-sized amounts. Do not confuse with marsh marigold (Caltha), which is poisonous.

Should I feed my pet Calendula?

Yes—clean, pesticide-free calendula flowers can be an occasional treat for rabbits and guinea pigs, and a tiny petal taste for chinchillas when introduced slowly. It is not a hay replacement.

How much can I feed them?

Offer a few fresh petals or a small pinch of dried, dye-free petals, a couple of times per week at most. Stop if you see soft stool, reduced hay intake, or refusal of normal food. Use the calculator linked in this article so treats stay proportional to hay.
