HOW'S THE HAY LOOKING?

Fresh From The Hopper

As new hay batches arrive at our warehouse, typically every 4 to 6 weeks, we'll update each hay.

A WHOLE NEW HAY REPORT

Providing You A More Realistic Description

We realized that doing an annual harvest report on only the first batch of hay from that season’s harvest was more of an initial analysis. It was great at giving us an early glimpse into the anticipated quality for the year, but not a guarantee of what each batch would be.

It was with that in mind that we wanted to provide you with a more realistic description of what the hay looks and feels like as each new batch arrives from the farm. Ensuring you have the most accurate information available when you place your order and allowing you to make informed choices with confidence!

Timothy Hay

Coarse Timothy Hay

Last Updated: May 01, 2025

Description:

This batch is still a bit softer, but it has a good blend of medium-length stems, long seed heads, and flat, broad leaves.

While this is a first cut, this particular batch is softer than we’ve seen recently, with great leaf content. Good news, this batch contains no weeds, and looks clean with minimal dust.

The hay looks good, and we are happy with the outcome of this batch’s color, fragrance, and overall quality.

Features:

The stems that are in this batch are a bit thinner, but still crunchy, and the leaves are flat and wide.

Even with this batch being softer and having thinner stems, it contains the same great nutritional content needed for our small pets to continue this as their daily diet hay. We’ve had good feedback on this batch so far!

Our Recommendations

  • If you’re looking for more leaf content, but would like to keep the stems and stalks we recommend two options:
  1. Try out the Medium Timothy Hay
  2. Grab some Soft Timothy (mostly leaves) to mix into your Coarse Timothy for some variety
  • While this batch is a first cut, if you are looking for more stem content:
  1. We recommend our Medium Timothy as it contains a bit more stem content which may be a good alternative if you need hearty stems!
  • If you’re looking for more seed heads:
  1. We recommend grabbing some of our Timothy Flowers to mix into your Coarse Timothy.
  • If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.

Medium Timothy Hay

Last Updated: February 03, 2025

Description:

This batch is dark green, with an abundance of long, thin stems, with good leaf and seed head content that vary about 8-10 inches on average in length.

We’ve noticed that this batch contains some “red” leaf. This just means it was growing for a longer period of time on the field to get the longest stems and leaves possible, which makes a few of the leaves turn a different color.

If you’ve ordered our previous batches of Medium Timothy, then it will all look the same to you! We’ve received some questions about the color and wanted to make note of it.

Features:

Long, flat and wide leaves, great content of thinner stems, and open seed heads for variety in texture. Minimal brown leaf.

There is a variety in texture with leaves, stems, and seed heads!

Our Recommendations

  • If your small pet was loving the softer Medium Timothy we had in our 2022 harvest, then this batch of Medium Timothy may be a bit too coarse for you. We’d suggest ordering our Soft Timothy instead as it contains the soft leafy hay that they’re used to!
  • If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.

Soft Timothy Hay

Last Updated: August 26, 2025

Description:

This batch has an abundance of soft, flat, and wide leaves, on average about 4-5” in length! It contains a little more stem content than normal, so you’ll experience a variety of textures.

There is brown leaf present, however this is normal and usually found in Soft Timothy Hay (this is due to keeping the hay growing on the field to maximize the growth of the hay).

Note: This batch is a little on the dry side due to environmental factors and the climbing heat we experienced near the end of this harvest.

Features:

So far, there are no weeds or brome found within this batch. You may find some dust in this batch as the pieces are on the shorter side.

Our Recommendations

  • If you’re looking for more stems, try our Coarse or Medium Timothy Hay as they both have great leaf content and a generous amount of stems and seed heads.
  • If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass as it’s a great alternative to those who suffer from allergies or are prone to illness from dust particles.

Orchard Grass

Coarse Orchard Grass

Last Updated: August 26, 2025

Description:

This batch is overall a good batch for those who liked the coarser, fibrous leaves of our Orchard Grass. Long, thicker leaves averaging around 8 inches in length.

There are minimal to no seed heads along with minimal brown leaf and leaf crush is present.

Features:

Great for filing down overgrown incisors, also a great alternative to those who may be allergic to Timothy Hay.

Our Recommendations

  • If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend this hay or trying our Soft Orchard Grass.
  • This batch will allow small pets who may need something coarser to help file those teeth down to achieve better dental health.
  • On the other hand, if your small pet has certain dental issues where typically they would need something softer, it’s best to skip this batch and try our Soft Orchard Grass. Please consult with your veterinarian if you have questions about your small pet’s dental health.

Soft Orchard Grass

Last Updated: August 26, 2025

Description:

This batch contains medium length leaves that are thick and fibrous, but a little coarser than normal.

Features:

Note: This batch is a little on the dry side due to environmental factors and the climbing heat we experienced near the end of this harvest.

Our Recommendations

  • If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend this hay or our Coarse Orchard Grass.

Other Hays

Alfalfa Hay

Last Updated: February 03, 2025

Description:

This batch is green, the color looks even better than the previous batch! With an abundance of stem content, averaging around 8 inches in length. There is minimal brown leaf.

Due to swatching, a process that cuts the alfalfa down in multiple parts to maximize drying and maturing, there is a mixture of leaves on and off the stem.

Features:

You may see leaves fall from the stems or unattached, this is due to the swathing process and the drying out process - which is okay!

Perfect for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas under 6 months of age to help them get the needed protein and nutrients they need to grow.

Our Recommendations

  • Once your small pet is older than 6 months, we recommend you start to transition them to grass hay (such as Timothy or Orchard).

Mountain Grass

Last Updated: February 03, 2025

Description:

This batch is particularly heavy on Soft Timothy leaves, but also has a blend of Soft Orchard leaves and wild grasses like brome and meadow grass. Even with this batch being heavier in Soft Timothy leaves you and your small pets will still be happy with the variety of textures!

Features:

A great variety of textures and stalks, seed heads, and leaves with Timothy, Orchard Grass, brome, meadow, and other wild grasses.

Our Recommendations

  • If you’re looking for a blended mix, we recommend ordering a small batch of Orchard Grass to mix in with the Mountain Grass since the Timothy Hay is very prevalent in this batch.

Oat Hay

Last Updated: August 26, 2025

Description:

This batch of Oat Hay is not pure Oat Hay. While this batch does have more Oat Hay content, there is still a blend of Alfalfa Hay and may contain some weeds.

This batch contains long stems that are a mixture of golden yellow and green in color. There is a bit less leaf content than previous batches, but seed heads are present.

Note: Some Chenopodium Album (also known as Goosefoot or Lamb’s Quarter) is found within this batch. This is a harmless weed that many wild and domestic rabbits like to snack on! It’s closely related to quinoa and is edible and completely safe to feed your rabbit and other small pets. Even humans can eat this!

Features:

Great treat hay or daily diet hay, however because of the Alfalfa content, we would recommend this batch for those who are underweight or small pets under 6 months of age.

This batch does have even more Oat Hay content than the previous batch, so there is improvement!

Our Recommendations

  • Because of the Alfalfa content, we would recommend this batch for those who are underweight or small pets under 6 months of age.
