Eggplant plant: toxic to pets (avoid).

Eggplant

Solanum melongena

Guideline: Poisonous

Type: Outdoor Plants

Eggplant is a plant species in the nightshade family. The stalk is a deep purple with large leaves and dark purple oval-shaped fruits hanging down from the stalk.

For Your Pet: The plant itself is extremely toxic to animals and humans alike. Because they are in the nightshade family, they contain a toxin called solanine. Eating any part other than the fruit is dangerous and symptoms include severe pain in the mouth and throat, nausea, vomiting, and could potentially put small pets into cardiac arrest.

Warning: Do not feed your pet any part of the Eggplant plant as it can cause serious illness or death.

Resources: If you believe that your pet has been poisoned immediately call your vet or one of the animal poison control hotlines on this list.
