Giant Hogweed: Toxic plant for pets

Giant Hogweed

Heracleum mantegazzianum

Guideline: Poisonous

Type: Outdoor Plants

Also known as cart-wheel flower, hogsbane, and giant cow parsnip, Giant Hogweed is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant used as an ornamental plant that has very large parsley-shaped leaves, a thick green and red-spotted stem, and clusters of small white flowers that tower over the rest of the plant.

For Your Pet: The sap of this plant is phototoxic. When in contact with the sap, it prevents the skin from being able to protect itself from the sun and UV rays which can lead to extreme skin inflammation, sensitivity, and discomfort. It is said to affect humans and animals. This can have very serious ramifications if your pet has ingested any part of this plant.

Warning: Do not feed your pet Giant Hogweed as it can cause serious illness.

Resources: If you believe that your pet has been poisoned immediately call your vet or one of the animal poison control hotlines on this list.
