Oranges

Citrus × sinensis

Guideline: Sometimes Treats

Type: Fruits

Other Names: Sweet orange, navel orange, table orange (fruit—not mock orange)

Sweet oranges are round citrus fruits with a fragrant peel and juicy segments. They are rich in natural sugars and acids—fine for people in moderation, but a so-so match for hindgut fermenters.

Often Mistaken For

Is Oranges item toxic?

Orange flesh is not poisonous like a true toxic shrub, but citric acid and sugar can irritate the mouth and gut in rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas if you overfeed. Peels and oils are harsher than a little flesh.

Should I feed my pet Oranges?

Rarely—only a tiny taste of ripe flesh for rabbits or guinea pigs that tolerate fruit, and almost never for chinchillas. When in doubt, pick a less acidic treat.

How much can I feed them?

Offer a segment the size of your fingertip, not a half orange. Remove seeds; skip peel and canned syrupy oranges. Use the calculator linked in this article so fruit stays a small fraction of the diet next to unlimited hay.
