Fresh red tomatoes for pet treats.

Tomatoes

Solanum lycopersicum

Guideline: Sometimes Treats

Type: Fruits

The tomato plant is in the nightshade family and produces a plump, juicy fruit that is most commonly red when ripe, but can also be found in yellow, orange, or green varieties. The fruit itself is edible for your small pet and is what you'd find in the grocery store; it is the only safe part to consider feeding. The leaves, stems, and roots of the plant, as well as any unripe green fruit, contain toxins like solanine, a glycoalkaloid that can be harmful. These parts are poisonous and should never be fed to your pet, remember, it's just the ripe fruit that is okay for an occasional snack.

Often Mistaken For

For Your Pet: Tomatoes are considered a safe, occasional treat for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas because of their sugar content. Feeding them a little bit every once in a while is absolutely fine, but overfeeding can easily cause a tummy ache and diarrhea. The fruit is mostly water, which is great, but it has very little fiber which means it shouldn't replace any of their daily hay

Warning: The stem and leaves of the tomato plant are poisonous to your pet due to containing toxins that can cause severe illness. Please only feed the ripe fruit in moderation, ensuring no green parts, leaves, or stems are included. If your pet accidentally eats the leaves or stems, call your vet quickly.
