Tomatoes: only an occasional rabbit treat, in small amounts.

Tomatoes

Solanum lycopersicum

Guideline: Sometimes Treats

Type: Fruits

Other Names: Cherry tomato, plum tomato, beefsteak tomato

The tomato plant is in the nightshade family and produces a plump, juicy fruit that is most commonly red when ripe, but can also be found in yellow, orange, or green varieties. The fruit itself is edible for your small pet and is what you'd find in the grocery store; it is the only safe part to consider feeding. The leaves, stems, and roots of the plant, as well as any unripe green fruit, contain toxins like solanine, a glycoalkaloid that can be harmful. These parts are poisonous and should never be fed to your pet, remember, it's just the ripe fruit that is okay for an occasional snack.

Often Mistaken For

Is Tomatoes item toxic?

Ripe tomato fruit is not poisonous in small amounts for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Tomato leaves, stems, vines, and green unripe fruit contain solanine and other nightshade toxins—never feed those parts.

Should I feed my pet Tomatoes?

Yes—as an occasional fruit treat for rabbits and guinea pigs when you offer ripe flesh only with all green parts removed. Ask your veterinarian before sharing with chinchillas.

How much can I feed them?

Offer about one cherry tomato or a thin slice of larger tomato flesh once or twice a week at most—not daily. Remove stems, leaves, and any green areas. Unlimited hay stays the main diet.
