Clementine—let rabbits have a little only on occasion.

Clementine

Citrus × clementina

Sometimes—rabbits may have a tiny taste of ripe clementine flesh, but peels and big wedges are a no. Acid and sugar bother many stomachs, so keep fruit rare next to unlimited hay, and skip citrus for chinchillas unless a vet says otherwise. For other citrus pages, see our oranges, satsuma, and tangerine guides.

Guideline: Sometimes Treats

Type: Fruits

Other Names: Clementine orange, Algerian tangerine, Citrus clementina, seedless mandarin (clementine types)

Clementines are small, easy-peel hybrid mandarin oranges (Citrus × clementina) with thin skin and usually few seeds. They are a grocery citrus—sweeter than lemons, still higher in natural sugar and acid than leafy greens.

Often Mistaken For

Is Clementine item toxic?

Clementine flesh is not a classic plant poison, but citric acid and sugar can irritate the mouth and gut in rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas if you overfeed. Peels and oils are harsher than a little flesh.

Should I feed my pet Clementine?

Rarely—only a tiny taste of ripe flesh for rabbits or guinea pigs that tolerate fruit, and almost never for chinchillas. When in doubt, pick a less acidic treat.

How much can I feed them?

Offer a segment the size of your fingertip, not a half fruit. Remove seeds; skip peel and canned syrupy segments. Use the linked calculator so fruit stays a small fraction of the diet next to unlimited hay.
