Timothy allergies are common, in pets and the people who care for them. Orchard grass is a different plant species, so many who react to timothy tolerate it better, while it still covers the same key nutrients your pet needs.

If allergies are a concern for you or your pet, mention it to your vet so they can help you watch for symptoms as you make the switch.

Because Soft Orchard Grass is our gentlest cut, it's also a good option if your pet needs a softer texture for reasons beyond allergies—picky eating, seniors, or sensitive teeth.

For adult rabbits 7 months and older and guinea pigs 6 months and older, grass hay should make up at least 80% of the diet. For chinchillas older than 1 year, aim for at least 75% grass hay.

Younger animals, nursing mothers, and pets with health concerns may need different portions. Check with your vet if you're unsure.

Mix the new hay with the old hay over 7–14 days so the change is gradual.

Watch appetite and droppings during the switch. If your pet stops eating or stool looks unusual, slow the transition and contact your vet.

Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow—a breathable bag or bin works well.

Avoid sealing hay in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.

Commercial hay from a trusted producer is very low risk for RHDV2, and we monitor official reporting for the regions where we source and pack hay.

We source in Northern California, where there have been no reported RHDV2 cases in our sourcing and warehouse areas to date. Current inventory is from the 2025–2026 growing season in that region. USDA guidance suggests dried virus may remain stable about three months; we follow harvest timing, storage, and handling with that in mind.

Both are orchard grass—the difference is texture. Soft cut has fine stems and gentle leaves; coarse cut has thicker stems and more seed head, closer to a first-cut timothy texture.

Ultra Premium Soft Orchard Grass is our gentlest grade—often the best fit for picky eaters, seniors, and pets with sensitive teeth. Coarse orchard grass may suit pets that need more dental wear while still avoiding timothy.
