What Are the Differences Between Your Hays?
Coarse Timothy Hay is high in fiber and lower in protein, which is why it is a staple grass hay for adult rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. First-cut plants grow long, thick stems, shorter broad leaves, and long seed heads, so the finished hay is coarser than later cuts. That extra stem is useful for chewing and digestion.
Medium Timothy Hay is a softer second-cut hay: thinner stems, shorter seed heads, and broad leaves that are easier for many small pets to eat. It is still a grass hay (fiber first, protein modest). It is often a good fit for aging pets who still need some stem for teeth, just not the coarsest first cut.
Soft Timothy Hay is mostly leaf, with few stems or seed heads. It may come from a third cutting or an unusually leafy second cutting. It is easier to chew for pets with dental trouble, and it still supplies the fiber grass hay is for. Because it is so soft, pair it with chew toys such as apple chew sticks, or mix in some Coarse Timothy or Coarse Orchard so teeth still get work.
Soft Orchard Grass is the softest grass hay we sell. It is a common swap when a pet or a person does better away from Timothy. Long, soft blades, few seed heads, fewer stalks. Feed it free-choice like other grass hays, and add a chew or a little coarse hay for teeth.
Coarse Orchard Grass plays a similar role to Coarse Timothy: more fiber in the stems and seed heads, long strands for chewing, and a grass-hay nutrient profile. It is the orchard option when you want more crunch and you are avoiding Timothy.
Alfalfa Hay is a legume, not a grass. It is richer in protein and calcium, which is why it fits growing rabbits (about 3 weeks to 7 months), and why adult rabbits should only get limited amounts unless a vet is managing weight or calcium. Grass hay should take over as the free-choice staple when you transition: about 7 months for rabbits, 6 months for guinea pigs, and about 1 year for chinchillas.
Mountain Grass is a mixed meadow grass hay: high fiber, lower protein and calcium, with mixed textures and colors. It is closer to what a wild rabbit would forage, with enough coarseness to help wear teeth.
That is the core lineup. For the current look of a cutting, see Fresh From the Hopper. Value Blend, botanical (flower) hays, and hay cubes have their own product pages so this answer stays scannable.
How Much Hay Should I Feed?
Grass hay should be in front of adult rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas all day. It is the bulk of the diet, not a side dish. Pellets, veggies, and treats are the parts you measure.
Amounts change with age and weight. Use the rabbit food calculator to size a hay order, and the recommended daily feeding chart for hay, pellets, veggies, and treats by life stage.
If chewing looks painful, appetite drops, or droppings change, call a rabbit-savvy vet before you keep swapping hay types.
Do You Have Good Quality “X” in Stock Right Now?
If a size is for sale on the site, we intend to ship it. We do not leave a buy button on hay we cannot fill.
For how the current cutting looks (color, stem, leaf), read Fresh From the Hopper. Hay is a farm product, so each harvest has a personality. We still pack by hand and bag inside the box.

My Rabbit Won’t Eat Any Hay. What Should I Do?
Keep fresh grass hay out 24 hours a day. It should be most of a rabbit’s diet because fiber keeps the gut moving and the teeth wearing. If chewing looks sore, that is a vet visit, not a flavor problem.
Try feeding in a favorite spot (many rabbits snack in the litter box). Cut back on pellets and treats so hay is the interesting food again. Offer more than one grass hay; picky eaters often like a different cut or orchard instead of Timothy.
Avoid dusty, powdered hay. Look for hay that smells sweet, not musty, with strands they can pick up. A pinch of rabbit-safe herb (parsley, basil, cilantro) rubbed on the hay can help, but a little goes a long way.
If droppings stop, turn to diarrhea, or your rabbit hunches and presses their belly to the floor, skip home remedies and go to the vet. Gas and GI slowdowns get dangerous fast in rabbits.
Why Should I Buy This Paper Bedding?
Our paper beddings are made from food-grade virgin paper, tested dioxin-free, and meant to be safe if a small pet nibbles. They are highly absorbent (about six times their weight for the shredded paper), 99.9% dust-free, and built to resist turning into a sodden mat. Skip clay litter for small pets; it is a poor match for animals that dig and nibble.
Pick the format that matches the setup:
Natural shredded paper — unscented, the everyday litter-box and habitat bedding.
White shredded paper — same paper idea, easier to see droppings and urine spots.
Lavender shredded paper — a light lavender scent if that helps the room, not a substitute for cleaning the box.
Paper pellets — denser pellets for boxes where shredded paper migrates or you want a heavier litter.
Change the box on a schedule that matches how many pets you have. Absorbent bedding lasts longer than newsprint or shavings, but it still needs swapping.
How Do I Bundle and Save?
Add two or more eligible items and sizes to the cart. The discount applies at checkout automatically; you do not enter a special bundle code. Savings typically range from 5% to 30% as you add more qualifying pieces.
Bundling is for select Rabbit Hole Hay items (ultra premium hays, hay cubes, alfalfa pellets, chew sticks, and food-grade bedding) in the sizes listed on the Bundle & Save page. Mix and match those items. If the discount does not appear, one line in the cart is probably not on the eligible list.
What Is Rabbit Hole Hay Doing About RHDV2?
Commercially packaged hay from a producer in a region without local cases is a very low-risk way for RHDV2 to move. The virus is still a serious disease in rabbits, which is why biosecurity at home and a conversation with a rabbit-savvy vet (including vaccines where they are available) matter more than panic about a sealed bag of hay.
We watch CDFA and USDA reporting for the Northern California area where we source hay and run the warehouse. For symptoms, maps, vaccines, and a longer hay-safety explanation, read our RHDV2 information and FAQ. We update that article when official guidance or local status changes.
Order Questions
How Long Will It Take to Receive My Order?
We pack in Chico, California, and most U.S. orders leave the warehouse the next business day. We do not ship Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
After it ships, West Coast deliveries typically take 2–4 business days. East Coast deliveries typically take 6–8 business days. Tracking in your shipping email is the live picture for your box.
How Do I Track My Order Status?
When the order ships, you get an email with a tracking number. Open that link for the carrier’s current scan.
You can also find the order under your account. If the email is missing, write support@rabbitholehay.com with the order number and we will resend tracking.
If you already have a tracking number, you can also look it up on our tracking page.
My Order Says It’s Delivered, But It’s Not Here. Where Is It?
Carriers sometimes scan “delivered” before the truck actually reaches you, or a box lands at a neighbor’s porch. Wait 24 hours, then contact us if it still has not shown up. We will help hunt it down or replace it.
Only Part of My Order Was Delivered. Where Is the Rest?
Larger orders often split into more than one package, each with its own tracking number. You are not charged extra for that split. Check every tracking link in the shipping emails before you assume a line is missing. If a package is truly gone after that, email us and we will fix it.
This Doesn’t Look Like My Normal Order of Hay. What Do I Do?
Hay changes with the harvest: color, stem length, and leafiness shift with weather and cutting. That does not automatically mean it is a bad box. Compare it with the current notes on Fresh From the Hopper.
If it smells musty, looks moldy, or your pet will not touch it, email photos to support@rabbitholehay.com. We will replace it or refund it under the policy below.
I Received Dusty, Dirty, or Brown Hay. What Do I Do?
Hay is a farm product. Drought years, wet years, and late cuttings all change how a box looks. We still want you to be happy with what you opened.
Email support@rabbitholehay.com within 30 days, or see Shipping & Returns. We will send a replacement or refund.
I Found a Dead Mouse, Rat, or Bird in My Hay. What Do I Do?
Throw out the affected hay. Email support@rabbitholehay.com and we will send a replacement.
We receive hay in large farm bales and pack your order by hand. Field animals sometimes end up in a bale despite the checks. It is rare, it is unpleasant, and we will make the order right.
Shipping & Return Questions
How Long Does It Take to Ship?
Most orders ship the next business day from our Chico warehouse. After that, plan on 2–4 business days to the West Coast and 6–8 business days to the East Coast.
Continental U.S. orders of $65 or more get free standard shipping. Under $65, shipping is a tiered rate you will see at checkout. We bag hay inside the box so it does not dry out on the truck, and the weight on the listing is product weight, not the box.
Do You Ship Internationally?
Sometimes, and only to countries that will accept plant products like hay. Many countries block or treat hay because seeds and pests are an agriculture risk.
The current yes/no list, fees such as phytosanitary certificates, and distributor notes live on our international shipping page. If your country is not a simple checkout, email support@rabbitholehay.com before you order.
What’s Your Return Policy?
We generally do not take physical returns because shipping hay back costs more than the product. If you are unhappy, tell us within 30 days.
You can choose a free replacement or a money-back refund if the product is not right for you and your small pet. Call (530) 763-6900 or email support@rabbitholehay.com. Details are on Shipping & Returns.
What Parcel Services Do You Use?
Mostly FedEx, with UPS and USPS when that is the better path for the box. If you have a carrier constraint (apartment lockers, a rural route), mention it in the order notes or email us and we will do what we can.
Subscription Program Questions
How Does a Rabbit Hole Hay Subscription Work?
Subscribe on the product page to get hay and staples on a schedule you pick. New subscriptions start at Tier 1: 10% off for the first four orders (the first shipment plus three recurrences).
On the fifth order of that same subscription, it moves to Tier 2: 15% off on future recurrences. Tiers follow that subscription. A brand-new subscription starts at Tier 1 again.
How Do I Make a Subscription Order?
On the product page, choose Subscribe & Save 10% before you add to cart, pick a delivery frequency, then add the item. Repeat for every product you want on a schedule, then check out.
Different frequencies create separate subscriptions. They all show up under Manage Subscriptions in your account.
How Do I Choose My Delivery Frequency?
After you select Subscribe & Save, a “Deliver every…” menu appears. Options run from every week through every 6 months (including 2 weeks, monthly, 6 weeks, 2 months, 3 months, and the in-between week counts).
Pick the gap that matches how fast your pets empty a box, not an optimistic schedule you will skip every time.
What Does It Mean to Have an “Active” Subscription?
Active means it is not paused or canceled. Skipping the next order does not take it out of Active, and it does not knock you out of your tier.
Paused stops upcoming charges until you resume, and you keep the tier you had. Canceled ends that subscription. If you subscribe again later, you start at Tier 1.
Can I Have Multiple Products With Different Delivery Frequencies?
Yes, but not on one subscription. Same frequency can share a subscription. Different frequencies become separate subscriptions, all listed under Manage Subscriptions.
Can I Change My Delivery Frequency After Ordering?
Yes. Change it, skip, or reschedule in Manage Subscriptions. The next date is counted from the day you change it, not from the last delivery.
Example: if you switch to every 3 months today, the next order is about 3 months from today, not 3 months from the last box.
Can I Add Products to My Subscription?
Yes. Add items in Manage Subscriptions whenever the diet or the cage list changes.
Can I Remove Products From My Subscription?
Yes, in Manage Subscriptions. If you are in Tier 2 and you want to drop a line without risking the tier, email support@rabbitholehay.com or call (530) 763-6900 and we will edit it for you.
Can I Skip a Shipment?
Yes, with no penalty to your tier. In Manage Subscriptions, under the billing schedule, use Skip payment (that is skip shipment). If you do not see it, email us and we will skip it.
Can I Pause My Subscription?
Yes. Pause my subscription holds every upcoming order on that subscription number. Resume with Resume my subscription when you want the next box. Pausing does not reset your tier. If the button is missing, email support.
I’d Like to Switch a Subscription Product for Future Orders. How Do I Do That?
Call or email us with the old item and the new item if you want to keep your current tier.
You can also swap it yourself in the portal. A self-serve swap sends that subscription back to Tier 1.
If you swap it yourself, this video shows the portal steps. A self-serve swap returns that subscription to Tier 1; a call or email keeps your tier.
How Do I Add a One-Time Product to My Next Subscription Order?
You can add a one-off item to the next recurrence from Manage Subscriptions (one-time add, not a new recurring line). If the portal is unclear, email us the order number and the SKU and we will add it for that shipment only.
I Changed My Address on My Account, but the Subscription Still Went to the Old Address.
The store account address and the subscription address are separate. Update the address inside Manage Subscriptions as well, or the next box will still use the old one. We are sorry that is two places; until the apps share one address, both need the new one.
How Do I Cancel My Subscription?
Use Cancel in the customer portal. If you do not see it, email support@rabbitholehay.com and we will cancel it.
If I No Longer Want Recurring Orders, When Must I Cancel?
Cancel before that recurrence ships and you will not be charged for it. If it already left the warehouse, treat it like a regular shipped order.
If I Cancel in Tier 2 and Re-Subscribe, Do I Stay in Tier 2?
No. A new subscription starts at Tier 1. Pause instead of cancel if you think you will come back and you want to keep the 15%.
