- Single ingredient — 100% alfalfa hay, nothing added.
- Fuels healthy growth — Higher protein and calcium than grass hay for young, growing pets.
- Good for nursing & pregnant does — Supports extra nutritional needs.
- Hand-packed fresh — Fresh, green, fragrant hay with minimal dust.
- Great occasional treat for adults — A small amount adds variety once your pet is on grass hay.
Alfalfa naturally has more protein and calcium than grass hay, which is exactly what growing bodies need.
For healthy adult rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas, alfalfa works best as an occasional treat rather than a free-choice hay — feeding it free-choice to adults can raise the risk of obesity, digestive upset, and bladder stones.
We hand-pack every box for freshness with minimal dust.

Most orders are shipped from our Warehouse the Next Business Day. In an effort to ensure your product comes as quickly as possible, your product may arrive in a brown box rather than the colored box shown in the image.

Ultra Premium Alfalfa Hay is a legume hay — not a grass hay — for young, growing, pregnant, or nursing rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and other small herbivores.
Alfalfa has a thicker stem and rounder leaves than grass hays, and it's naturally higher in protein and calcium to fuel growth.
Best for rabbits younger than 7 months, guinea pigs younger than 6 months, chinchillas younger than 1 year, and nursing or pregnant does. For healthy adults, it's a treat, not an everyday hay.
Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow—a breathable bag or bin works well.
Avoid sealing hay in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.
For rabbits younger than 7 months, guinea pigs younger than 6 months, and chinchillas younger than 1 year, alfalfa can be fed free-choice as the primary hay alongside pellets.
Around that age, start transitioning to a grass hay (Timothy or Orchard) by mixing the two over 7–14 days. For healthy adults, keep alfalfa to a small treat portion — grass hay should be the everyday base.
Pregnant or nursing does can continue free-choice alfalfa for the extra protein and calcium.
We hand-pack every box and inspect hay for freshness with minimal dust. Harvest reports give a season-level look at what we're sourcing; individual batches can vary as new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks.
For batch-level updates, see Fresh From The Hopper. For the current Alfalfa Hay Report with analysis and photos, use the Alfalfa Hay Report link.
Small Pet's Guide to Hay Quality
Annual Harvest Report & Fresh From The Hopper - How's The Hay Looking?
Our harvest reports give a first look at each year's newly harvested alfalfa and what to expect for the season. Nature still shifts batch to batch, so color and texture can vary slightly between deliveries.
When new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks, we share updates through Fresh From The Hopper. See the current Alfalfa Hay Report for analysis and photos.

Small Pet Owners Ask
Is it okay to give my adult rabbit alfalfa?
Yes, in small amounts as an occasional treat.
Alfalfa is higher in protein and calcium than grass hay, so it isn't meant to be a free-choice food for healthy adults. Feeding too much can raise the risk of obesity, digestive upset, and bladder stones.
For everyday feeding, grass hay like Timothy or Orchard should make up the bulk of an adult's diet, with alfalfa reserved for a small treat portion a few times a week.
How much alfalfa hay should I feed my rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla?
Feeding amount depends on age. Kits get mother's milk until 3 weeks, then nibbles of alfalfa hay and pellets from 3–4 weeks, then unlimited alfalfa hay and pellets from about 4 weeks through 7 months.
For rabbits older than 7 months, guinea pigs older than 6 months, and chinchillas older than 1 year, limit alfalfa to a small treat portion a few times a week and switch to free-choice grass hay (Timothy or Orchard) as the everyday base.
Pregnant or nursing does can continue free-choice alfalfa for the extra protein and calcium.
What is the best way to introduce new hay to my pet?
Mix the new hay with the old hay over 7–14 days so the change is gradual.
Watch appetite and droppings during the switch. If your pet stops eating or stool looks unusual, slow the transition and contact your vet.
How should I store hay to keep it fresh?
Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow—a breathable bag or bin works well.
Avoid sealing hay in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.
Is this hay safe regarding RHDV2?
Commercial hay from a trusted producer is very low risk for RHDV2, and we monitor official reporting for the regions where we source and pack hay.
We source in Northern California, where there have been no reported RHDV2 cases in our sourcing and warehouse areas to date. Current inventory is from the 2025–2026 growing season in that region. USDA guidance suggests dried virus may remain stable about three months; we follow harvest timing, storage, and handling with that in mind.
For symptoms, vaccines, maps, and what we watch ongoing, see our RHDV2 information hub and the RHDV2 section of our FAQ.
When should I transition my pet from alfalfa to grass hay?
Around 7 months for rabbits, 6 months for guinea pigs, and 1 year for chinchillas.
Mix the new grass hay (Timothy or Orchard) in with alfalfa over 7–14 days, gradually increasing the grass hay ratio until it's the primary hay. Keep a small amount of alfalfa on hand afterward as an occasional treat.

I was very pleased with the quality of the 20lb box of alfalfa hay. Lots of green leaves, not just a lot of sticks, and not yellow or brown. Only thing I noticed was there were some rocks and what looked like wood chips in it. Not a big deal, but surprised to find that. Delivery was fast, too.
Hi Maurice, thank you for your kind words! We're glad you liked the quality of our alfalfa hay and that the delivery was quick. We appreciate your feedback about the rocks and wood chips, will look into it. Thanks for shopping with us!
I may have said this before, but after my rabbit absolutely refused to eat timothy hay for the first year she lived here, a friend recommended Rabbit Hole Hay. What a godsend you’ve been! Emily eats your timothy hay with the gusto formerly reserved only for bits of fresh banana. Thank you thank you thank you!
We're so thrilled to hear that Emily loves our Ultra Premium Alfalfa Hay. We're honored to be her hay of choice and are happy to provide her with a delicious and nutritious option. Thank you for your kind words and for choosing Rabbit Hole Hay. Have a hoppy day!
Rabbit hole hay is the best hay period, I would be so sad if anything ever happened to them. My bun got real sick and I had to infuse some alfalfa hay in his diet temporary to trigger some weight gain. He looooooves it.
Nicole, we're absolutely thrilled to hear your bun is feeling better and that our Ultra Premium Alfalfa Hay helped him gain some weight back!! It warms our hearts to know he loves it so much. Your kind words mean the world to us, and we truly appreciate you sharing your positive experience! We hope to continue giving you the best hay! ❤️
perfect alfalfa. Rabbits love it!
Good quality. My rabbits eat it
Thanks, Kristy! 😊 We're thrilled your rabbits are enjoying the Ultra Premium Alfalfa Hay. Your feedback makes our day!

Good quality. My rabbits eat it
Thanks, Kristy! 😊 We're thrilled your rabbits are enjoying the Ultra Premium Alfalfa Hay. Your feedback makes our day!
My 12+ year old boy had gone off his Timothy hay and, although he was still eating everything else, he seemed to have lost his appetite for hay. I found these sample size bags at Rabbit Hole Hay sheerly by accident, and they were exactly what I needed. I bought the Alfalfa and the Mountain Grass. He was slightly interested in the Mountain Grass, but the Alfalfa was a hit. I’m struggling to keep his weight on at this point, so this was a great find. It also confirmed for me that his disinterest in Timothy was not a dental issue, which I had been concerned about. Both hays appeared fresh, very green, and clean. I will be reordering soon!
That's wonderful to hear, Christine! 😊 We're thrilled that your senior bun is enjoying our Alfalfa Hay and that it helped address your concerns about his appetite. It's great that the freshness and quality met your expectations. Thank you for choosing Rabbit Hole Hay, and we're excited to continue being a part of your furry friend's diet. Looking forward to your next order!
Anytime I'd let her have a bit, she'd later produce cecetropes. She's never done this with any other brand of hay. I imagine it's too rich or too high in something for her.
We have three very picky lionheads including a VERY picky angora. Our bunnies love this very green fresh hay!
Wow, Cindy, it sounds like your lionheads and especially that picky angora have given their stamp of approval! We’re thrilled to hear they’re loving the fresh green hay. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!
Of course they loved the alfalfa, I use sparingly and they havn’t had any in a while
so this really made their day!
I don’t know if it was just a problem with the sample we received, but the alfalfa that was in the sample was unsatisfactory. It was mostly dry and coarse stems with very few leaves at all. Our young buns pretty much ignored the sample until we added some younger alfalfa to it.
Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear that the alfalfa didn't meet your expectations. It sounds like the sample was not up to our usual standard, and that's definitely not what we want for your young buns. We’d love to make it right! Please reach out to us at (530) 763-6900 or support@rabbitholehay.com so we can assist you further. Thank you for letting us know, and for giving us the chance to improve.
Jack is crazy about this hay.
Jack is too old for alfalfa, but I sprinkle on top of other hay varieties to encourage eating. Also give as an occasional snack.
My Shadow rabbit hates hay. She does eat alfalfa cubes. So I got the alfalfa hay and she actually gets into the box. Yes happy bunny happy mommy.
"Just don't do drugs" they repeated to my generation..... and here I am shoveling it into the mouths of my personal & rescue buns who just "won't eat hay" or so I thought..
A little rabbit hole hay of any kind and you'd think all other hays were dirt in comparison. The alfalfa is for the kits and lactating mums.... and they dig into this like nothing else! Every box has come clean.... I'm impressed.. the buns are addicted.
Don't say I didn't warn you!
My rabbit loves it but since I dole it out it little bits, I will get a smaller bag next time.
My young rabbits go through this hay voraciously. It’s amazing quality, lots of leafy substance, and good stiff stems, all a beautiful green. Smells great too.
My baby bunnies love this alfalfa. I personally like how fresh and green it is, and the fact that it has lots of leaves along with the hard stems. I use the leaf detritus as forage mix in the bedding.
I have a very elderly rabbit rescued house rabbit (14 years old) who is still mobile, he is not a small breed, and he LOVES Rabbit Hole Hay's Alfalfa hay! We tried to other brands of alfalfa hay and it was awful, and he would not eat it.
He ate Timothy Hay his entire life until this past year. Because he has aging health issues he lost a significant amount of weight. After a visit to our rabbit savvy exotic vet it was recommended to us to mix Alfalfa hay with Toby's regular hay and after 6 months we took back to our vet for a wellness check and he gained some of his weight back, which is unheard of in a 14 year old bunny, our vet couldn't believe it!
Toby's protein levels were too low (kidney issues due to age) even though he was on the correct house rabbit diet.
Since adding Rabbit Hole Hay's Alfalfa hay to Toby's diet his protein levels are back in the normal range!!!
We have 4 picky house rabbits and they are all picky hay eaters, but they love Rabbit Hole Hay.
We use the Soft Timothy and Soft Orchard hay for the 3 other non-elderly buns.
Moral of the review is Rabbit Hole Hay is exceptional and *some* elderly rabbits benefit from alfalfa hay, but make sure your vet gives you the greenlight after blood work is done. Alfalfa hay is high in protein and calcium which can be harmful in high amounts in adult rabbits who aren't deficient and/or are overweight. Alfalfa will cause weight gain if given daily.
Thank you Rabbit Hole Hay! 🐰🐰🐰🐰💕
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with Rabbit Hole Hay's Alfalfa! We're thrilled to hear that Toby is loving it and benefiting from it. It's amazing that he gained some weight back, which is quite rare for a bunny his age.
We understand the importance of protein levels, especially for aging rabbits, and we're glad that Toby's protein levels are back in the normal range after adding our Alfalfa hay to his diet. It's heartwarming to know that our hay has made a positive difference in his health.
We're also happy to hear that your other picky hay eaters enjoy our Soft Timothy and Soft Orchard hay. We strive to provide high-quality hay that rabbits love, and your feedback means a lot to us.
Thank you for emphasizing the importance of consulting with a vet and doing blood work before incorporating Alfalfa hay into a rabbit's diet. It's crucial to ensure the right balance for their specific needs.
We truly appreciate your support and trust in Rabbit Hole Hay!
My bunny never got too excited over hay until I gave her this alfalfa hay. She was obsessed with this hay so I’m going to replace oxbow alfalfa with this one.
Wonderful, sweet and so tasty 😋. Our bunny loves 💘your hay
Organic freshness our Mellouise run to the bag and puts his little face in to snack
My bunny loves this. He recognizes the bag and goes crazy gaga over it. He is one year old now and this is given just as a treat now and then. I feel it is healthier than processed treats out there. Love this. Will buy again.
Since I got my bun he has always preferred the alfalfa pellets over the hay. As soon as I introduced the rabbit hole alfalfa hay he now goes to eat that first!
Ask any bunny what their fave hay is and unconditionally it will be alfalfa hay. Paisley and Amelia say, "What's NOT to like? It's the Kind of Hay!! Yum Yum
Super fresh and green with lots of tasty leaves. My rabbit, who turns her nose up at most hays—including alfalfa—dove in to this stuff. She’s an adult, so she gets only a small handful 1-2 times a week as a treat. Great job, RabbitHole!
I received my Rabbit Hole Alfalfa today and just gave a little to each rescue bunny as a treat...I have 5🐰. You'd think I gave them candy! One bunny's VERY finiky and ate little hay. She loves Rabbit Hole Alfalfa so much it encourages her to eat other hay. All are between 6mo to a year so their main hay is Timothy and orchard grass. Also if a bunny gets bloat which is very dangerous, a little Rabbit Hole Alfalfa plus fresh Cilantro and Kale encourages them to eat. It's a relief to have something on hand so good that helps keep loved bunnies in peak health!
Just received our 5 pound box of alfalfa hay for my 6 week old Holland Lop and she is LOVING it already. Limited brown pieces and when I opened the box, she immediately lit up! Thanks Rabbit Hole Hay :)
Dear Rabbit Hole,
Being a new rabbit Mom, I was not sure what was needed to feed a healthy bunny, but like my dogs, I knew it had to be organic and I found your website. We received our first order of Alfalfa yesterday and Yoda the bunny gives new meaning to "Gone in Sixty seconds"! Quite frankly, the alfalfa is so fresh, I am tempted to leave the box open, because it makes the the whole house smell so good! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
