- Maximum roughage — The most fiber-dense cut in our timothy line, built for dental wear.
- Hand-packed fresh — Packed by hand for fresh hay with minimal dust.
- High fiber, naturally lower protein — Supports healthy digestion and steady weight in a grass-hay diet.
- Single ingredient — 100% timothy hay with no fillers or additives.
- Made for small herbivores — Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and similar pets.
That extra roughage is exactly the point: pets that need more dental wear, or that have gotten bored with softer cuts, often do best here.
It matches what many shoppers call "first cut" texture, though a cool summer can produce a second harvest just as coarse, so we grade every batch to that coarse standard instead of promising a specific cutting.
We hand-pack every bag for freshness with minimal dust.

Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay is usually a farmer's first harvest—long thick stems, short broad leaves, and long seed heads still intact—for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and other small herbivores.
It matches what many shoppers mean when they ask for "first cut": long stems and seed heads with less tender leaf. A cool summer can produce an equally coarse second harvest, so we grade each batch to our coarse standard instead of promising a specific cutting.
Compared with our medium or soft timothy, this cut asks more of the teeth—often the right pick for strong chewers or pets that need extra dental wear.
Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow. A breathable bag or bin in a closet, pantry, or garage usually works well.
Avoid keeping hay sealed in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.
Keep grass hay available at all times. Most healthy adult herbivores can eat timothy free-choice alongside fresh water.
For adult rabbits 7 months and older and guinea pigs 6 months and older, grass hay should make up at least 80% of the diet. For chinchillas older than 1 year, aim for at least 75% grass hay.
When switching hays, mix the old and new hay over 7–14 days and watch appetite and droppings. Pellets and treats are supplemental.
We hand-pack every bag and inspect hay for freshness with minimal dust. Harvest reports give a season-level look at what we're sourcing; individual batches can vary as new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks.
For batch-level updates, see Fresh From The Hopper. For the current Coarse Timothy harvest report with analysis and photos, use the Coarse Timothy harvest report link.
Small Pet's Guide to Hay Quality
Annual Harvest Report & Fresh From The Hopper - How's The Hay Looking?
Our harvest reports give a first look at each year's newly harvested coarse timothy and what we expect from the rest of the season. Nature still shifts batch to batch, so color and texture can vary slightly between deliveries.
When new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks, we share updates through Fresh From The Hopper. See the current Coarse Timothy harvest report for analysis and photos.

Small Pet Owners Ask
Is Coarse Timothy the same as First Cut Timothy?
Most of the time, yes. Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay is graded for long thick stems, short broad leaves, and long seed heads—qualities that usually come from a farmer's first harvest of the season.
Occasionally a cool summer produces a second harvest with those same qualities, so instead of promising a specific cutting, we grade every batch to our coarse standard.
That means you get consistently coarse texture bag to bag, whichever harvest it came from.
How much Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay should I feed my rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla?
For adult rabbits 7 months and older and guinea pigs 6 months and older, grass hay should make up at least 80% of the diet. For chinchillas older than 1 year, aim for at least 75% grass hay.
Younger animals, nursing mothers, and pets with health concerns may need different portions. Check with your vet if you're unsure.
What is the best way to introduce new hay to my pet?
Mix the new hay with the old hay over 7–14 days so the change is gradual.
Watch appetite and droppings during the switch. If your pet stops eating or stool looks unusual, slow the transition and contact your vet.
How should I store hay to keep it fresh?
Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow—a breathable bag or bin works well.
Avoid sealing hay in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.
Is this hay safe regarding RHDV2?
Commercial hay from a trusted producer is very low risk for RHDV2, and we monitor official reporting for the regions where we source and pack hay.
We source in Northern California, where there have been no reported RHDV2 cases in our sourcing and warehouse areas to date. Current inventory is from the 2025–2026 growing season in that region. USDA guidance suggests dried virus may remain stable about three months; we follow harvest timing, storage, and handling with that in mind.
For symptoms, vaccines, maps, and what we watch ongoing, see our RHDV2 information hub and the RHDV2 section of our FAQ.
What is the difference between soft, medium, and coarse timothy?
All three are timothy grass hay—the difference is texture. Soft cut is leafier with thinner stems; coarse cut has more stem and fewer tender leaves; medium sits between them.
Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay is our roughest grade—often the best fit for strong chewers or pets that need extra dental wear. Medium or soft timothy may suit pets that prefer a gentler chew.

Our rabbits love their timothy hay! They come running as soon as they hear the bag crinkling
As a new bunny owner trying various hay brands, I decided to try Rabbit Hole, and I'm very happy with my choice! The packaging helps keep it fresher for a longer time. My Olive loves it!
Hi Corrie! Olive looks adorable enjoying the hay. We're so glad you and Olive are happy with our product. Thanks for sharing your experience!
My bunnies are at least eating this hay. I have bought several different brands and they just will not eat it.Hopefully this is one that they will continue to eat.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay. We're glad to hear that your bunnies are finally enjoying their hay! We understand how frustrating it can be to find a brand that they will actually eat. We hope that they continue to love our hay and we appreciate your support as a first-time buyer. Have a hoppy day!
not that good, especially for the price
We're so sorry to hear that you were disappointed with our Soft Timothy hay. We take all feedback seriously and would like to assure you that we are constantly striving in offering quality product.
As hay is 90% of my rabbits diet, I love providing him with a variety of hay textures and tastes to not only keep him interested but to keep his teeth in good condition and his gut super healthy.
Being able to order a variety of hay types in sample sizes from Rabbit Hole Hay has been a huge help.
My order of both coarse and soft orchard were a huge hit , so much so I immediately
ordered a 5 pound box.
This hay is so green and fresh and there are no choppy pieces or dust in the entire box.
Thank you, Rabbit Hole Hay for making my life easier to provide Rumi with a wonderful selection of great hay.

A large portion of the coarse Timothy hay is straight dust. It is unfortunate because I have not had issues in the past. The one I ordered before was not the correct type, but we did go through it until past the 30 days, so it might have been a fluke. We have not had any issues with the 20lb batches. Now I have to manually sift the hay and will lose a good bit of it in the process.
The very top of the hay was very good, so we did not notice until we hit the middle of the first bale. There are a lot of tiny pieces and enough dust to make my rabbits sneeze. One of our rabbits got a sinus infesction from the last batch due to excessive hay dust, so we are very concerned about this. I sent an email to support last week and received no response.
I have been irritated by the marketing emails stating it is hand packed with minimal dust since this was definitely not the case with our last two orders.
Oh my gosh my bunny absolutely loves this hay ! I was worried because she wasn't eating as much hay and she should. So I looked around and ordered from you . And how glad I did ! To see her little mouth happily chewing on it makes my day
Thrilled to hear your bunny is enjoying our hay, Kathy! It's wonderful knowing that we've helped make her mealtime happy and healthy. Thanks for sharing this lovely experience! 😊
So glad to hear that Hoop & Juna are loving the Coarse Timothy Hay, Susan! Thanks for sharing their approval!
Thanks for sharing, Frank! We're thrilled to hear that Nucita loves the hay! It's always wonderful to know our Timothy Hay is a hit with your furry friend. If you ever have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Happy munching to Nucita! 😊
Tidbit nibbled on it and favors softer hay, he does like the bargain box with all 3 cuts mixed in, I think he favors variety, not always a hay fan which is why I get several brands and different hay, The girls are less picky, they so far seem to like everything. All 3 are happy with variety
Thanks, Susan! It sounds like Tidbit, Hurricane, and Volcano have their own unique tastes, and we're thrilled that they're enjoying our selection. Variety is indeed the spice of life, even for our furry friends. We're delighted that your little ones are happy, and their satisfaction means the world to us! 😊
I adopted a pair of bonded chinchillas they came with two 40 lbs boxes of rabbit hole 1st cut hay. It stayed fresh for a couple of years. I finally ran out and had to run and get some from a local chain store and they won't touch it. I'm pretty sure I ordered the right one. I know they will be happy to get their regular hay.
So glad to hear your chinchillas loved our hay and that it stayed fresh for so long! 😊 It can be tough when they turn their noses up at other brands, but we're thrilled to have you back. Thanks for sharing your experience, DeAnna!
Rabbit hole hay is the only hay my rabbit will eat! We have tried many many others which have typically resulted in a case of judgmental side eye and a demanding boycott on eating. Along came Rabbit Hole premium and viola! He actually lays in it and eats every morsel. We had a little hiccup with an order over a holiday weekend but customer service was terrific! We will be lifelong customers✨
Thank you so much, Kelly! ✨ We're thrilled to hear your bunny loves our Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay and that it met his approval (no more side eye, yay!). We're also glad to hear our customer service could help resolve the holiday hiccup. Looking forward to many more happy hay days with you as lifelong customers!

My Bun goes crazy for this hay!
So happy to hear your bun loves our Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay! It's fantastic to know it's such a hit! Thanks for sharing!
I received a replacement for a previous order of course Timothy that was low quality. When I received it, it looked better, but there was something different about the smell. Over the next several days I started to have significant allergy symptoms on and off. I discovered it correlated with when I refilled the hay from this new box. I am allergic to orchard grass but not Timothy (which I found out when I first ordered a sampler pack). These new allergy symptoms matched the reaction I had back then to orchard grass. Somehow there was a significant amount of orchard grass mixed in with the Timothy hay (or it wasn't Timothy at all). I have to give away the whole 40lb box since I can't breathe in the same room when it is out. This is third issue I've had in a row with my orders. There is a major quality assurance problem that needs to be worked out and I am not waiting around for that to happen.
This is the best hay ever. This batch was especially course and long - my bun is obsessed. He loves this hay so much, he doesn’t even really care much for his pellets anymore…
This was the first time I was disappointed. The hay looked crushed and cut up. It was also already browning. Not sure what happened

The 20 lbs of Coarse Timothy Hay appears to be all short leaves and few stems. Seems old. My bunny is not interested in eating it.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Laura. I need high quality course hay, but this hay just isn’t consistently course. Often it comes soft, which is very frustrating because it upsets the tummies of some of my bunnies. They really need the course hay. I wish this was more consistent.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Sarah. I'm sorry to hear that the hay hasn't met your expectations for coarseness and that it’s affecting your bunnies' tummies. We aim for consistent quality and want to make this right for you. Please reach out to us at (530) 763-6900 or support@rabbitholehay.com so we can assist you further.
A lot of small debris I’m throwing over half out as my picky buns will not eat this. Not a lot of stems which is what they prefer. Very soft not what I expected with a corse hay
The hay seems moist in the 2 boxes I ordered. I am pretty concerned that my buns are not eating this as well 😞
Thanks for sharing your feedback, Roxanne. I'm sorry to hear that the hay seems moist and your buns are not eating it well 😞. That's not what we want for you or your little ones, and we definitely want to make it right. Please reach out to us at (530) 763-6900 or support@rabbitholehay.com, so we can assist you further and find a solution that works for you.
Unfortunately, the winter hay this year has been very inconsistent and the coarse hay box we received was all very soft, which is not very good for our rabbit's teeth. Additionally, I reached out twice for support about this bad batch of hay and haven't heard anything back from their support team which is usually very responsive. All-in-all a disappointment for me as a years-long customer.
Sorry to hear about your experience with the winter hay, Stephen. We pride ourselves on our support team’s responsiveness, so I'm truly sorry for any communication issues you encountered. We are reaching out as soon as possible to you. Your satisfaction as a loyal customer means a lot to us.
Bunnies won’t eat anything else
That's fantastic to hear, Laura! It's always a win when the bunnies are happy and enjoy their hay. Thanks for choosing Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy Hay for your little ones! 🙌
