- Soft grass blades — Leafier cut for picky eaters, seniors, and pets with sensitive teeth.
- Hand-packed fresh — Packed by hand for fresh hay with minimal dust.
- High fiber, naturally lower protein — Supports healthy digestion and steady weight in a grass-hay diet.
- Single ingredient — 100% timothy hay with no fillers or additives.
- Made for small herbivores — Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and similar pets.
Choose this cut if your pet is picky, senior, or has sensitive teeth but still needs long-strand fiber for healthy digestion. Grass hay should stay unlimited; this grade can make daily eating easier.
You get leafier, softer blades than our medium or coarse timothy. It matches what many shoppers mean when they ask for "third cut"—a soft, leaf-heavy profile—but harvest timing varies, so we grade every batch to that soft standard.
We hand-pack every bag for freshness with minimal dust.

Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay is our softest timothy cut—mostly tender leaves with thin stems—for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and other small herbivores.
It matches what many shoppers mean when they ask for "third cut": a soft, leaf-heavy profile. True third-cut timothy is rare because weather has to cooperate for a late-season harvest, so we grade each batch to our soft standard instead of promising a specific cutting.
Compared with our medium or coarse timothy, this cut is leafier and easier to chew—often a better fit for picky eaters, seniors, and pets with sensitive teeth.
Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow. A breathable bag or bin in a closet, pantry, or garage usually works well.
Avoid keeping hay sealed in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.
Keep grass hay available at all times. Most healthy adult herbivores can eat timothy free-choice alongside fresh water.
For adult rabbits 7 months and older and guinea pigs 6 months and older, grass hay should make up at least 80% of the diet. For chinchillas older than 1 year, aim for at least 75% grass hay.
When switching hays, mix the old and new hay over 7–14 days and watch appetite and droppings. Pellets and treats are supplemental.
We hand-pack every bag and inspect hay for freshness with minimal dust. Harvest reports give a season-level look at what we're sourcing; individual batches can vary as new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks.
For batch-level updates, see Fresh From The Hopper. For the current Soft Timothy harvest report with analysis and photos, use the Soft Timothy harvest report link.
Small Pet's Guide to Hay Quality
Annual Harvest Report & Fresh From The Hopper - How's The Hay Looking?
Our harvest reports give a first look at each year's newly harvested soft timothy and what we expect from the rest of the season. Nature still shifts batch to batch, so color and texture can vary slightly between deliveries.
When new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks, we share updates through Fresh From The Hopper. See the current Soft Timothy harvest report for analysis and photos.

Small Pet Owners Ask
Is Soft Timothy like Third Cut Timothy?
Similar goal, not the same guarantee. Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay is graded for a soft, leaf-heavy profile—what many people want when they ask for "third cut."
True third-cut timothy needs a warm spring and a dry, warm fall for a late-season harvest, and that weather pattern is not reliable every year. Instead of promising a specific cutting, we grade each batch to our soft standard.
We also source from high-elevation fields that can produce a softer second cut with thinner stalks and fuller leaves—often very close to the texture shoppers expect from third cut.
How much Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay should I feed my rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla?
Grass hay should be unlimited for most healthy adult herbivores, and it should make up the bulk of the diet.
For adult rabbits 7 months and older and guinea pigs 6 months and older, aim for at least 80% grass hay. For chinchillas older than 1 year, aim for at least 75% grass hay. Younger animals, nursing mothers, and pets with health concerns may need different portions—check with your vet if you're unsure.
What is the best way to introduce new hay to my pet?
Mix the new hay with the old hay over 7–14 days so the change is gradual.
Watch appetite and droppings during the switch. If your pet stops eating or stool looks unusual, slow the transition and contact your vet.
How should I store hay to keep it fresh?
Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow—a breathable bag or bin works well.
Avoid sealing hay in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.
Is this hay safe regarding RHDV2?
Commercial hay from a trusted producer is very low risk for RHDV2, and we monitor official reporting for the regions where we source and pack hay.
We source in Northern California, where there have been no reported RHDV2 cases in our sourcing and warehouse areas to date. Current inventory is from the 2025–2026 growing season in that region. USDA guidance suggests dried virus may remain stable about three months; we follow harvest timing, storage, and handling with that in mind.
For symptoms, vaccines, maps, and what we watch ongoing, see our RHDV2 information hub and the RHDV2 section of our FAQ.
What is the difference between soft, medium, and coarse timothy?
All three are timothy grass hay—the difference is texture. Soft cut is leafier with thinner stems; coarse cut has more stem and fewer tender leaves; medium sits between them.
Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay is our softest grade—often the best fit for picky eaters, seniors, and pets with sensitive teeth. Medium or coarse timothy may suit pets that prefer more stem and chew time.

I’ve been purchasing rabbit hole hay for the past 4 years as the soft Timothy hay is the only hay my bun will eat. For about the past year I’ve been pretty disappointed since it’s not as it used to be. I know it can vary depending on weather and how the seasons are but the soft hay hasn’t been soft at all. The hay I’ve been receiving is more like medium or coarse Timothy hay and is not like it used to. I’ve gotten samples of other types and my bun will not touch it which leaves me scrambling trying other brands so I’m spending even more money. I’m just hoping that this will get better because for the cost it hasn’t been worth it.
Shout out to Viviana who went above & beyond to ensure hay was delivered Fed-Ex 2-Day to me at an Airbnb where I was out-of-state after I had to leave town suddenly for a death in the family.
My little dwarf rabbit Henry LOVES the Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay and refuses to eat similar hay from other companies. Very grateful!
Thank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear Henry loves the hay, and we're glad Viviana could help ensure it arrived quickly during such a tough time. Wishing you and Henry all the best!
Hay was fluffy and green some yellow but its normal my bun still goes crazy for it !!,
My rabbits absolutely love this hay, and they can be picky!
Viviana provided the worst Customer Service. I repeatedly explained the issue with the transaction and in the end she said "any who." Extremely unprofessional service.

The most recent box of hay I received was not soft. It was mostly hard stems and course pieces. Not the usual quality I have received in the past.
I've tried and tried over the last months?years? to get a good bag of yalls soft timothy again. It used to be amazing, premium, the best I could find. But for so long now I've gotten nothing but sticks, short pieces (2 inches max), just nothing usable..I've tried ordering here, from Amazon, from Chewy...more of the same. I don't understand how it's soooooo far from what I once was getting. This last bag (Amazon, but shouldn't matter as it's still RHH) about put me over the edge. I felt like crying. Its just so so bad. I feel for my boys who know the bag and sit there in anticipation, only to get some shake and have me hovering over them, picking out these pointed sticks so they don't hurt themselves. I don't get it!!! When we first tried yall, the hay was perfect. I don't use that term lightly. Now its barely salvageable. So much throw away, and that's not to mention the time wasted waiting for it to arrive, then to be disappointed again. I just keep thinking, maybe if I try one more time, we'll get a good bag! I'm not financially in a position to keep ordering and hoping, I need to be sure it'll be the premium hay as advertised. I guess my luck ran out long ago. I miss the days of long strands of green, fresh smelling hay and little to nothing wasted. Just so, so beyond disappointed. (Picture shows length of longest pieces and above them, the amount of rock hard, inedible sticks picked from that tiny portion of hay)

I had been purchasing third cutting Timothy hay from a competitor of rabbit hole. There were quite a few times where the hay was not consistent. It was dry and my bun Oliver wouldn’t eat it. I came across Rabbit Hole on Instagram and what was nice as you could order a small sample which I did. Oliver was elated. He ate so much hay. Needless to say I’ve been re-ordering every 4 to 6 weeks the third cutting Timothy hay and it’s so fragrant and as soft as can be.
Our picky Bun Otie cannot get enough of this hay! He has never eaten this much hay in one day and we are thrilled. He is now 5 years old, and we can tell that he feels great. We've had the frightening experience of GI stasis, so we know how important hay is to his diet!
This is wonderful to hear, Marilyn! We're absolutely thrilled Otie is loving our Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay so much, especially after experiencing GI stasis. Knowing he feels great at 5 years old and is eating his hay with such gusto truly makes our day! Thanks for sharing this fantastic update!
I ordered samples of medium, coarse, and soft Timothy hay. My bunny stopped eating his original hay, and I had to find something else. I tried other brands and also orchard grass, but he wouldn't eat any hay. He only ate pellets and greens until I gave him the soft timothy hay to try from the sample, and he went crazy over it. He didn't like the medium one and coarse as much, but he loves the soft kind. I decided to order 20 lbs of it, which just arrived, and he still loves it.
My buns can’t stop eating this hay! Both adopted buns (brother & sister & free roam ) LOVE it & he attacks it the minute I put it in their bowl. She’s right behind & digging for her favorite crunchy pieces!
OMB, our Oliver got so picky with his hay! Low and behold we purchased the 3rd cutting Timothy hay and he has almost eaten the entire 2 lb bag! I ordered another bag immediately and today I will order 5 lb bag!
Thanks for the fabulous hay...it's BUNDERFUL!
This is the only hay my picky eater will eat! So happy we found your awesome product!
It pains us to leave this review because we adore RHH. But enough is enough. Why is it that RHH continues to struggle with harmful thorny thistle in its soft timothy hay when no other mainstream, small animal hay companies seem to have this problem? In our experience, this has been occurring off and on since the pandemic. While we very much appreciate the stellar customer service reps who are quick and kind to send replacement boxes, the fact is… we don’t want replacements… we simply want the problem addressed! The thought of rabbits getting painful thorns getting stuck in their gums—or worse, their esophaguses—is unbearable. And I guarantee there are many rabbit owners who are not seeing the tiny pieces of this weed and are feeding it to their bunnies. RHH, our thorn-riddled fingers and our rabbits BEG you… work with the farmers of these fields that keep producing this horrid thistle & get it eradicated. Customers who pay a premium price for a hay marketed as “premium” should not have to repetitively deal with this.
The first time I bought hay from Rabbit Hole Hay was on February 6, 2018. I was actually their first Canadian customer at the time, and my boy was 4 years old. I bought the Ultra Premium Coarse Timothy, and my boy was eating it for 5 years. Then, about 2 years ago, I switchched him to the Ultra Premium Medium Timothy Hay. Then on September 18, 2025, I switched him to the Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay. He had actually reached a stage, where he was unable to chew rough hay, so the Soft Timothy saved his life. I cant say enough about the amazing customer service and professiolism of Jason Kruger, one of the cofounders of Rabbit Hole Hay, as well as the rest of the staff working there. Thank you all so much for being part of our journey as bunny parents.
It wasn't as good as the last shipment, but the bunnies are still eating it. I had actually stored the last box for some time before breaking it open. I was very impressed it was moist and green. This last box was very dry and very green; it looked artificially green! Surely that's not possible? Still..this is the Only hay my three rabbits will eat.
Thanks, Marcia, for sharing your experience! It sounds like the previous shipment was quite impressive, and we’re sorry to hear that this one didn’t match up. We understand how important quality is, especially for your bunnies' favorite hay. While it’s great they’re still enjoying it, we take your concerns about the texture and color seriously. Please reach out to us at (530) 763-6900 or support@rabbitholehay.com so we can make this right and ensure your next shipment meets your expectations.
I was buying the ultra soft from another seller but I switched to their new bigger size and it was either a bad season or they put the wrong stuff in. Luckily I’d ordered a bag of this one. Not only have I not had hay splinters, the piggies like it just as much as the previous brand before the bigger size.
Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊 We're thrilled to hear that your piggies are enjoying the Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay and that it’s splinter-free for you. It's wonderful to know our hay was able to step in when you needed it. Happy munching to your little ones!
Love, LUV, LOVE this hay...so soft, lush and green! My rabbits won't eat any other hay :)
Thank you so much, Angela! We're thrilled to hear how much you and your rabbits love our Ultra Premium Soft Timothy Hay. Soft, lush, and green is exactly what we aim for, and it's delightful to know your rabbits won't settle for anything else.
Soft Timothy is the only hay my 5 bunnies will eat! They literally eat their “body size” amount of hay everyday and much more. Yes, there was one shipment that was subpar, but Jessie to the rescue! Got the replacement box and it was magic! Thank you!
We just got our replacement box of hay and it's perfect. There are long, wide flat leaves with just a little stem that our bun loves. Thank you so much for your help, Jessi!
Thrilled to hear the replacement box is perfect, Emily! It's wonderful that your bun is enjoying the long, wide flat leaves. Jessi and the team are always here to help. Thank you for sharing your experience! 😊
Thank you for sending me a replacement. The first hay box was thin and mostly brown (picture has a lot of brown leaves), my rabbits don’t want to eat that batch. Jessi was so kind to assist me before going to her vacation and sent me a different batch (mostly green, flat leaves, some stem) . My rabbits eating more hay again. Thank you Jessi and to your whole team.
So glad to hear the replacement batch worked out for your rabbits! We’ll pass along your kind words to Jessi—she’ll be thrilled to know her help made a difference. Thanks for giving us the chance to make it right and for sharing your feedback! 😊
The soft timothy hay has been really consistent for us the last year+ but it looks like the batch may have shifted recently. There are almost only long, thin, leaves in varying shades of green and brown. Sadly, this isn't a texture our bunny will eat. I wanted to post a photo in case others look to the reviews as they're getting their orders in to see what the batch is looking like. There are no wide leaves or stems like we've been used to.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Emily. We're sorry to hear this batch didn’t meet your expectations or your bunny's preferences. Quality and consistency are top priorities for us, so we’d love to make this right. Please reach out to us at (530) 763-6900 or support@rabbitholehay.com so we can assist you further.
My last order is on Nov 18. When shipped to here, I found the hay is a bit humid.
Main reason is because the pack is not properly wrapped.
Then I think the smell gone and obvious allow wet air came in.
Obviously, my rabbit are not showing interest in it.
When compare to the previous boxes, the response is obviously not the same.
So, I am not satisfy with the quality of this box of hay.
