Small Pet Owners Ask
Is Medium Timothy like Second Cut Timothy?
Most of the time you’ll receive Second Cut Timothy Hay when you purchase our Medium Timothy Hay, however, on occasion you may receive a very soft First Cut Timothy Hay.
Here’s why…
Timothy Hay begins growing after its winter nap in the spring. By late spring or early summer the hay is ready to be harvested for the first time that growing season. It’s usually by mid-June that the farmer cuts the first growth of the year, commonly known as First Cut Timothy. The hay is then left to regrow and is harvested a second time usually by late summer, commonly referred to as Second Cut Timothy.
When it comes to First Cut, it is often during the hay’s early growth that the plant grows long thick stems, short broad leaves, and long seed heads (flowers). However, if we were to have an especially hot spring or the farmer were to “short-cut” the harvest (i.e. harvest the hay early), the first cut hay may have qualities more akin to a Second Cut Timothy Hay.
Second Cut generally has broader leaves, smaller and thinner stems, and shorter seed heads. We renamed our product to Medium Timothy Hay to allow us to provide you a product based on the qualities that you are looking for in your hay rather than the time of year it’s harvested. Rest assured that you’ll be getting consistent hay, with the qualities you and your small pet looking for!
The last three batches of timothy hay I've ordered keep coming out a bit bad :( lots of brown pieces and green pieces are very faint. Hay looks sun dried or something. Usually their hay is very green and smells amazing.
My bunny only eats hay when it's very green, so I've been having to buy different brands so that he can keep eating :((
Could be that they're going through a tough time with batches right now.
I love Rabbit Hole Hay because I've never had problems with their deliveries and customer service! I love their rabbit toys as well.
I just hope that the hay quality changes and so that I can come back to this brand :(
Ordered 2/ 10 lb boxes Medium Timothy hay since last batch was green & fresh. Not this time…hay was yellow, brittle, dusty, and smelled old. My 3 lb Dutch bunny won’t touch and just stares at me like “where’s my fresh hay?’”
On the bright side, RHH support rep Vivania listened, understood the situation, and offered to shipped 2 more 10 lb boxes from different fresher hay stock that day! I understand that hay crops are unpredictable. I will continue to be a Rabbit Hole hay customer because their high standards are the best.
Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad Viviana could assist you and we appreciate your understanding about hay quality. We hope your bunny enjoys the next batch! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything else.
About half of the box contained thin, dark "grass" that my rabbits refused to eat. Threw it out of their feeder.
Hi Shirley, thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear that some of the hay wasn't enjoyed by your rabbits. Please feel free to contact us at support@rabbitholehay.com or (530) 763-6900. We appreciate your input!
My girl, Ruby, loves the Alfalfa hay. My last order, I added the Timothy hay as well...she is beyond excited when she sees the bags...

Annie loves her medium cut Timothy. She gets a mix of medium and soft hay and it really seems to help her. This is the only hay she will eat and is absolutely the best hay there is. RabbitHole has always sold the very best hay, the quality and service provided can’t be beat. We’ve tried them all!
