HOW'S THE HAY LOOKING?

Fresh From The Hopper

As new hay batches arrive at our warehouse, typically every 4 to 6 weeks, we'll update each hay.

A WHOLE NEW HAY REPORT

Providing You A More Realistic Description

We realized that doing an annual harvest report on only the first batch of hay from that season’s harvest was more of an initial analysis. It was great at giving us an early glimpse into the anticipated quality for the year, but not a guarantee of what each batch would be.

It was with that in mind that we wanted to provide you with a more realistic description of what the hay looks and feels like as each new batch arrives from the farm. Ensuring you have the most accurate information available when you place your order and allowing you to make informed choices with confidence!

Alfalfa Hay

Description:

Here is the report on what we have in stock:

Overall Rating: 9.5/10
Harvest: Harvested in 2025
Location: Northern California
Color: Dark Green
Stems/Stalks: Thin
Leaves: A lot of leaf retention averaging 8" in length
Seed Heads/Flowers: None found
Leaf Crush: Moderate
Weeds: Nearly none
Brown Leaf: None
Dust: None

This batch is green, the color looks even better than the previous batch! With an abundance of stem content, averaging around 8 inches in length. There is minimal to no brown leaf.

Due to swatching, a process that cuts the alfalfa down in multiple parts to maximize drying and maturing, there is a mixture of leaves on and off the stem.

Features:

Really nice mountain Alfalfa! You may see leaves fall from the stems or unattached, this is due to the swathing process and the drying out process - which is okay!

Perfect for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas under 6 months of age to help them get the needed protein and nutrients they need to grow.

Our Recommendations

  • Once your small pet is older than 6 months, we recommend you start to transitioning them to grass hay (such as Timothy or Orchard).

Oat Hay

Last Updated: August 26, 2025

Description:

This batch of Oat Hay is not pure Oat Hay. While this batch does have more Oat Hay content, there is still a blend of Alfalfa Hay and may contain some weeds.

This batch contains long stems that are a mixture of golden yellow and green in color. There is a bit less leaf content than previous batches, but seed heads are present.

Note: Some Chenopodium Album (also known as Goosefoot or Lamb’s Quarter) is found within this batch. This is a harmless weed that many wild and domestic rabbits like to snack on! It’s closely related to quinoa and is edible and completely safe to feed your rabbit and other small pets. Even humans can eat this!

Features:

Great treat hay or daily diet hay, however because of the Alfalfa content, we would recommend this batch for those who are underweight or small pets under 6 months of age.

This batch does have even more Oat Hay content than the previous batch, so there is improvement!

Our Recommendations

  • Because of the Alfalfa content, we would recommend this batch for those who are underweight or small pets under 6 months of age.
