  • Balanced texture — Softer than coarse, more roughage than soft; a middle-ground chew.
  • Hand-packed fresh — Packed by hand for fresh hay with minimal dust.
  • High fiber, naturally lower protein — Supports healthy digestion and steady weight in a grass-hay diet.
  • Single ingredient — 100% timothy hay with no fillers or additives.
  • Made for small herbivores — Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and similar pets.
Ultra Premium Medium Timothy Hay sits between our Soft and Coarse cuts—thinner stems and broader leaves than Coarse, with a bit more chew than Soft. Most bags come from a farmer's second harvest, or an especially soft first harvest.
It's a solid everyday choice for adult rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas—enough roughage for dental wear without asking a lot from smaller or older teeth.
If your pet has struggled with coarser hay, this cut is a good middle step before Soft Timothy. It matches what many shoppers call "second cut" texture, though harvest timing varies, so we grade every batch to that medium standard.
We hand-pack every bag for freshness with minimal dust.

Harvest & Quality

Ultra Premium Medium Timothy Hay sits between our Soft and Coarse cuts—thinner stems and broader leaves than Coarse, with a bit more chew than Soft—for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and other small herbivores.

It matches what many shoppers mean when they ask for "second cut": broader leaves and shorter seed heads than a first harvest. Harvest timing varies, so we grade each batch to our medium standard instead of promising a specific cutting.

Compared with our coarse timothy, this cut is gentler on teeth; compared with our soft timothy, it keeps a bit more roughage for dental wear.

Store hay in a cool, dry place with good airflow. A breathable bag or bin in a closet, pantry, or garage usually works well.

Avoid keeping hay sealed in plastic long-term; trapped moisture can lead to mold. If hay smells musty, feels damp, or looks unusually dusty or discolored, discard it and open a fresh bag.

Keep grass hay available at all times. Most healthy adult herbivores can eat timothy free-choice alongside fresh water.

For adult rabbits 7 months and older and guinea pigs 6 months and older, grass hay should make up at least 80% of the diet. For chinchillas older than 1 year, aim for at least 75% grass hay.

When switching hays, mix the old and new hay over 7–14 days and watch appetite and droppings. Pellets and treats are supplemental.

We hand-pack every bag and inspect hay for freshness with minimal dust. Harvest reports give a season-level look at what we're sourcing; individual batches can vary as new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks.

For batch-level updates, see Fresh From The Hopper. For the current Medium Timothy harvest report with analysis and photos, use the Medium Timothy harvest report link.

Small Pet's Guide to Hay Quality

Annual Harvest Report & Fresh From The Hopper - How's The Hay Looking?

Our harvest reports give a first look at each year's newly harvested medium timothy and what we expect from the rest of the season. Nature still shifts batch to batch, so color and texture can vary slightly between deliveries.

When new hay arrives, typically every 4–6 weeks, we share updates through Fresh From The Hopper. See the current Medium Timothy harvest report for analysis and photos.

Not good this order

Ordered 2/ 10 lb boxes Medium Timothy hay since last batch was green & fresh. Not this time…hay was yellow, brittle, dusty, and smelled old. My 3 lb Dutch bunny won’t touch and just stares at me like “where’s my fresh hay?’”
On the bright side, RHH support rep Vivania listened, understood the situation, and offered to shipped 2 more 10 lb boxes from different fresher hay stock that day! I understand that hay crops are unpredictable. I will continue to be a Rabbit Hole hay customer because their high standards are the best.

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad Viviana could assist you and we appreciate your understanding about hay quality. We hope your bunny enjoys the next batch! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything else.

Emily changes her mind

Hay is best for buns, but my Emily would not partake! Then friends at the House Rabbit Network raved to me about your hay.
I opened the bag of your soft timothy hay and Emily came right over. She sniffed and ate as though we were at a five-star restaurant.
With her first mouthful I became a customer for life.
Thank you!!

Very short leaves.

The hay in the 2 lb bag I purchased was cut very short with the bulk of the bag comprised of 2" bits and a lot random smaller bits. Maybe one handful out of the whole bag, had leaves at 3-4" as described on the "what's in the hopper" page on date I ordered in November. The rabbits still love the taste but it was a chore shaking the small bits and dust off each time I fed it to them.

2nd cut timothy hay

I inherited 3 rabbits (one of which is atleast14byears old) from a couple friends. She brouggt me a unopened box of the 2nd cut hay. I threw it in a stall of my barn and forgot i had it yntil abt a month ago. Just before that i had returned 2 batches of another brand to tractor supply because it was soft and curly. My bunnies wouldnt eat. Not 1 and i have 6. I opened my one stall and decided to open bpx. It was dry and still 100% and met my rabbits satisfaction to eat.i think she said she got thru chewy.com but i just gotname off box and ordered direct. Ive only placed one order. And pricepoint i think it will be the same as what i have been spending and ill make less trips to store. Hands down good quality. I ordered the same as what the box said it was and all my rabbits love it.

Thanks, Alison! 😊 It's fantastic to hear that your rabbits are enjoying the Ultra Premium Medium Timothy Hay so much, especially after their previous picky eating! With it still being in great condition after sitting for a while, it sounds like it held up perfectly. We're thrilled the quality met your expectations and that ordering directly is working out for you. Your feedback means a lot, and we look forward to continuing to provide your bunnies with the hay they love.

Piggies love it

Smells fresh, Tidbit was eating some, Most brands in petstore have no fresh smell and none of my piggies were interested in any except for hay from certain 2 companies. Rabbit hole and another brand are 2 I get on line because there not found in petstores, So I go with what my piggies like and go with variety

We're thrilled to hear that Tidbit and your piggies love our hay! It’s great to know that the fresh smell stood out and met their approval. Thank you for choosing Rabbit Hole Hay as one of your go-to brands. We appreciate your trust in us to keep your piggies happy and healthy. 😊

My 2 new rescue buns LOVE this hay! It’s so nice & green with a good amount of seed heads, which they gobble down first. I used to order the soft timothy for my older buns but I didn’t want to spoil these young ones just yet.

It's fantastic to see that your rescue buns are loving the Ultra Premium Medium Timothy Hay, Cecelia! We’re thrilled that they enjoy the nice, green hay and gobble up the seed heads. Your thoughtful choice is clearly a hit with them. Thank you for sharing their joy with us! 😊

Best Hay

My chinchillas will not eat any other brand. There is little waste for me as they eat up all the hay I put in for them. With other brands they will throw it all out to the floor. I and the chinchillas are very happy with the medium hay :) Thank you Rabbit Hole Hay for keeping my chinchillas healthy and happy

We're thrilled to hear that your chinchillas love our Timothy Hay, Jillian! It's fantastic that there's little waste and they're enjoying every bit. Knowing that our hay helps keep them healthy and happy makes our day. Thank you for choosing Rabbit Hole Hay!

Best hay ever!

When I brought home my baby girl she was already eating Small Pet Select hay because this was what the breeder had her on. I stuck with them for a bit, but then I started having issues with them. I couldn't track any of my orders. I would get an order in a few days then the next order would take over a week even though I ordered the same thing. There was also more than one time where I got a stale bag of hay, and I don't like how they just pack the hay in a box. If it rains and I can't get the box inside right away I'll have wet and possibly moldy hay.
When I found Rabbit Hole Hay I was impressed how you bag your hay first AND box it to ship. Love that! I don't have to worry about being home when my order arrives.
I am just blown away with the customer service which is phenomenal. I absolutely love the fact that you have sample sizes. What an ingenius idea! I bought a bunch to see if my girl even liked your hay. Can I say...I couldn't get her head out of the bags!!! She LOVES your hay! She was never this excited about SPS.
Thank you so much for putting so much attention to detail, effort, and pride into your product from start to finish. I love your products and will continue to feed my little girl her favorite hay!

The last three batches of timothy hay I've ordered keep coming out a bit bad :( lots of brown pieces and green pieces are very faint. Hay looks sun dried or something. Usually their hay is very green and smells amazing.
My bunny only eats hay when it's very green, so I've been having to buy different brands so that he can keep eating :((
Could be that they're going through a tough time with batches right now.
I love Rabbit Hole Hay because I've never had problems with their deliveries and customer service! I love their rabbit toys as well.
I just hope that the hay quality changes and so that I can come back to this brand :(

Rabbits would not eat some of it.

About half of the box contained thin, dark "grass" that my rabbits refused to eat. Threw it out of their feeder.

Hi Shirley, thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear that some of the hay wasn't enjoyed by your rabbits. Please feel free to contact us at support@rabbitholehay.com or (530) 763-6900. We appreciate your input!

My buns did not love this 2nd cut hay

My buns did not love this 2nd cut hay. I had to mix with other hay from Pet Select for them to eat. The strands are short, not as long as the 2nd cut from Pet Select.

The price is also too high, I doubt i will order or recommend.
