We know that you want to be the best rabbit parent around. This can include feeding your rabbit the best Timothy Hay or other grass hays, to setting up their cage, to selecting rabbit bedding for them to sleep on.
Don't know a lot about hay for bedding or even your bedding options for pocket pets? Then keep reading to get the basics in bedding options.
Using recycled newspaper based products are great to use because they are thought to be less irritating to your rabbit than wood shavings.
Your rabbit’s respiratory system is very sensitive so keep this in mind when you are trying to make a decision on rabbit bedding. Make sure you avoid using glossy newsprint or advertisements as they don’t absorb moisture and can be unhealthy for your rabbit. Some newsprint inks will rub off on your rabbit leaving them a smudgy mess.
This is also known as Aspen Litter. It is highly absorbent and smells great. It looks just like softwood shavings, but is completely safe for small pets, particularly your rabbit.
Be careful though as it’s easy to mix Aspen Litter up with softwood shavings, which like cedar and pinewood are not safe for rabbits and can affect their liver enzymes. Pay close attention to the packaging and make sure you are not buying litter that could be unsafe for your rabbit.
Wood pulp bedding has similar features as using the recycled paper beddings but can offer more cushion for your rabbit. You also don’t need to worry about the phenol in the wood pulp (which is a dangerous to rabbits and used within pine and cedar shavings), which makes it easier to be the best rabbit owner.
We recommend using our Food Grade Bedding where you can choose between Natural or White in color. Both types of bedding are considered “Food Grade,” which means it’s approved by the FDA to wrap and serve human food, so it’s safe for both you and your rabbit.
Our Food Grade Bedding is:
You can use hay as bedding for your rabbit but this can be costly and less efficient for absorbency. But if you are out of your normal bedding and only have hay, then this isn’t the worse thing to use. Make sure you are using a grass hay such as Timothy Hay, Orchard Grass, or Mountain Grass rather than Alfalfa Hay to ensure that your rabbit doesn’t gain weight by eating the hay. Hay also won’t be as comfortable as the other options above.
